About this Artwork
This piece is part of House of Kutch’s ongoing efforts to document, preserve and revive the historic Kamangiri painting tradition of Kutch. As each artwork is hand-painted, slight variations are a natural part of its authenticity and uniqueness.
About this Work
The Vyala is one of the most distinctive figures found across the wall paintings of Kutch, a composite creature assembled from the most powerful forms a painter could bring together. Lion-bodied, spotted, human-faced and crowned, its tail curling into the head of a horse.
This piece is drawn from documentation by Pradip Zaveri, who researched and photographed the wall art of Kutch before the 2001 earthquake. In the paintings he recorded, the Vyala carries a particular quality, not fearsome, but magnificent. There is a difference, and the Kamangar painters understood it precisely. Much of what Pradip Zaveri documented no longer exists. This figure is one of the traces that remains.
