About this Artwork
This piece is part of House of Kutch’s ongoing efforts to document, preserve and revive the historic Kamangiri painting tradition of Kutch. As each artwork is hand-painted, slight variations are a natural part of its authenticity and uniqueness.
About this Work
The Kaliya Mardana is one of the most beloved episodes from the Krishna Leela , the moment when the young Krishna dances upon the hood of the great serpent Kaliya, taming him not through destruction but through grace. Light-footed, flute in hand, standing on the coiled hood with the ease of someone entirely at home in the miraculous.
This piece is drawn from Pradip Zaveri's documentation of Kutch wall art before the 2001 earthquake. The Kamangar painters returned to the Krishna Leela repeatedly , it was among the narratives most frequently commissioned by the merchant families who patronised these paintings. The diamond shape of this teak block draws the eye from the dancing figure above to the coiling serpent below , a composition that holds the full story within a single surface.
