About this Work
Lakshmi , goddess of prosperity and auspicious beginnings , was among the most frequently commissioned figures in the wall paintings of Kutch's merchant homes. To paint her on the walls of a trading family's home was not merely decorative. It was an act of intention.
This piece is drawn from a figure documented by Pradip Zaveri at Lala Merchant's House in Kutch before the 2001 earthquake , four-armed, jewelled, seated in composure, holding lotuses. She was painted to watch over a household and its prosperity. She continues to do so here.
Hand-painted on a reclaimed teak block whose natural grain and form become part of the composition. Artwork by Bhagyashree Nagda.
