About this Artwork
This piece is part of House of Kutch’s ongoing efforts to document, preserve and revive the historic Kamangiri painting tradition of Kutch. As each artwork is hand-painted, slight variations are a natural part of its authenticity and uniqueness.
About this Work
Among the figures documented by Nikhil Nagda during field research at Tera Fort is Dashanand , the ten-headed Ravana of the Ramayana.
In the visual traditions of India, Ravana is a figure of complexity rather than simple villainy , learned, powerful, devoted, possessed of ten faces that look in every direction at once. The Kamangar painters did not simplify him. They painted each head individually, each crowned, each carrying its own presence, the whole composition flowing across the surface as a single continuous form.
The crescent shape of this particular teak block mirrors that flow , ten faces cascading across an arc, as if the surface itself was waiting for this figure.
