About this Artwork
This piece is part of House of Kutch’s ongoing efforts to document, preserve and revive the historic Kamangiri painting tradition of Kutch. As each artwork is hand-painted, slight variations are a natural part of its authenticity and uniqueness.
About this Work
In Kutchi, the lion is called Sinh , and in the wall paintings of Kutch's merchant homes, he is not simply a decorative motif. He is a presence. A figure that commands the space around him, that speaks of strength, of guardianship, of the kind of authority that a prosperous family wished to carry within the walls of their home.
This piece is drawn from a figure documented by Pradip Zaveri at a merchant's house in Kandagra, Kutch , one of the sites he researched and photographed before the 2001 earthquake. Much of what Pradip Zaveri documented no longer exists in its original form. The Sinh at Kandagra is one of the surviving records of a painted tradition that once spread across merchant homes across the region.
The Kamangar painters gave this guardian figure the same richness they gave to divine subjects , because in the painted world of these homes, the guardian was as sacred as the deity beside it.
