About this Artwork
This piece is part of House of Kutch’s ongoing efforts to document, preserve and revive the historic Kamangiri painting tradition of Kutch. As each artwork is hand-painted, slight variations are a natural part of its authenticity and uniqueness.
About this Work
Chhatththi Janmotri Mata is the goddess of the sixth day, the deity believed to visit a newborn child on the sixth night after birth and write the destiny of that life. In Kutchi folk belief, this night is one of great significance. The family stays awake, prayers are offered, and the goddess is invited to write well. What she inscribes cannot be changed.
To find this figure on the walls of a merchant home is to understand how completely faith and daily life were woven together in these spaces. This piece is drawn from Kutch & Rama Randh by Ramsinhji Rathod, one of the key documentary sources for the visual and cultural traditions of Kutch, and represents one of the rarest figures in this series.
