About this Work
Jakhau is a small coastal settlement in Kutch, one of those places that holds much more history than its current appearance suggests. During a field visit, we found ourselves on the upper floor of an old building, looking out through a carved stone jharokha onto the rooftops and lanes below.
The building we were standing in was crumbling. The floor was broken. The carved columns of the balcony were worn and weathered. But through them, the village was completely alive, red tiled roofs, lime-washed walls, a turquoise window shutter catching the morning light, narrow lanes running between old houses, trees growing up between the buildings. A wind turbine turning quietly on the horizon.
That view, a decaying frame around a living village, is what this fresco is about.
The title Through the Window is literal. This is the view from that balcony, painted from the memory of standing between those columns and looking out at Jakhau going about its day, entirely unaware of being seen.
Painted using natural mineral pigments on a handcrafted lime-plaster surface, this piece belongs to our Heritage Fresco Series, a body of work rooted in specific places and specific moments of field research across Kutch.
