Description

About this Work

Than Jagir is a place that most people have never heard of, and that is part of what makes it so striking when you arrive there.

A historic structure in the Than region of Kutch, its colonnade of carved stone pillars stands largely forgotten. Each column is covered in detailed ornamentation, diamond lattice patterns, floral bands, bell capitals, the kind of carving that takes years to learn and a lifetime to master. Stone steps lead up to a long plinth. A carved cornice runs overhead. And around it all, vegetation has quietly grown in, the way nature does when a place is no longer maintained.

When we visited, the stillness was the first thing you noticed. No visitors. No crowds. Just the pillars, the stone, the light coming through.

This fresco comes directly from that visit from standing in front of that colonnade and trying to understand what it took to build something like this, and what it means that it is now slowly disappearing.

The fresco captures the rhythm of the pillars as they stand today, weathered, quiet, and still carrying extraordinary craft within them.

Painted using natural mineral pigments on a handcrafted lime-plaster surface, this piece belongs to our Heritage Fresco Series, a body of work rooted in specific places documented through fieldwork across Kutch.
