Description

About this Work

The Sun Temple at Kotai in Kutch has a carved ceiling panel that stops you in your tracks. At its centre is a sun medallion, surrounded by human figures radiating outward in perfect circular symmetry, as if orbiting the sun. Around them, the border is filled with floral carvings, wave patterns, and geometric bands, each one placed with extraordinary care and precision.

This fresco is our response to that ceiling, documented during field visits to Kotai as part of our ongoing research into the sacred architecture of Kutch.

We were struck by how the craftsmen who carved this panel brought together geometry, human figures, and devotion into a single composition. Everything turns around the sun. Everything is in relation to it.

Painted using natural mineral pigments on a handcrafted lime-plaster surface, this piece belongs to our Heritage Fresco Series, a body of work rooted in specific places and surfaces documented through fieldwork across Kutch.
