Description

About this Work

Pragmahal in Bhuj is one of Kutch's most remarkable buildings. Built in the 19th century, it brings together Gothic arches, carved sandstone columns, and ornamental stonework of extraordinary quality, a building that surprises you every time you look closely at it.

One of its most striking features is a window that stops you completely. A pointed Gothic arch frames a carved tympanum with a peacock at its centre, surrounded by dense floral scrollwork. Below it, fifteen jali panels filled with geometric star patterns. Flanking columns with carved capitals. And above everything, an arch of alternating ochre and cream sandstone that gives the whole composition a quiet, rhythmic beauty.

For House of Kutch, Pragmahal is not a distant monument. Our studio is situated within Darbargadh, the same complex. We pass these surfaces every day. This fresco came from looking at this window not once, but many times, across different lights and seasons.

Painted using natural mineral pigments on a handcrafted lime-plaster surface, this piece belongs to our Heritage Fresco Series, a body of work rooted in specific places documented through fieldwork across Kutch.
