Description

Overview

Darbargadh in Bhuj was once the ceremonial and residential heart of Kutch royalty. A complex of palaces, courtyards, towers, and arched facades that grew over generations, each layer added by a different ruler, each one bringing its own architectural sensibility to the whole.

Our studio is based within Darbargadh itself. We work here every day. Pragmahal, the Gothic palace that rises at its centre, is not something we visit. It is the view from our window, the building we walk past in the morning, the structure whose light changes through the day and across seasons.

This fresco is not a document of a single visit. It is a painting made from long familiarity, from knowing how the towers look in the early morning, how the arched facades catch the afternoon sun, how the whole complex feels when the lanes are quiet.

The composition captures a fragment of the roofline, towers, arches, layered forms, the way you see it when you are inside the complex rather than looking at it from outside. Not a monument. A place.

Painted using natural mineral pigments on a handcrafted lime-plaster surface, this piece belongs to our Heritage Fresco Series, a body of work rooted in specific places documented through fieldwork and daily life across Kutch.
