About this Piece

Indigo Trails reverses the logic of the other shirts in this collection.

Where Earthen Grid and Ochre Weave place the natural undyed Kala Cotton as a stripe against a dyed ground, Indigo Trails makes the natural fibre the ground itself. The cream-white of the undyed Kala Cotton covers the full body of the shirt, honest, uncoloured, exactly as it came from the loom. Against it, clusters of indigo-blue stripes run vertically from shoulder to hem, wide bands flanked by finer lines, each cluster slightly different in its spacing, the way handloom compositions always carry the memory of the hand that made them.

The indigo colour is achieved using non-toxic dyes, keeping the integrity of the Kala Cotton intact. The contrast between the natural cream ground and the indigo stripe is the entire composition, nothing else is needed.

The camp collar and half sleeves give this shirt a relaxed, open quality. The amber-brown natural buttons provide a warm counterpoint to the cool indigo, a detail that grounds the palette without disrupting it.

Kala Cotton is a sustainable indigenous cotton variety handwoven in Kutch, lightweight, breathable, and honest in its texture. It is a fabric that carries the place it came from. Wearing it is, in a small way, carrying Kutch.

This shirt is part of the House of Kutch 18 Limited Edition Kala Cotton Research Collection, an ongoing exploration of Kala Cotton's material possibilities through considered design and artisan craft. Indigo Trails is one of eighteen. It will not be repeated.

Fit & Style

Designed with a relaxed silhouette, the shirt features a camp collar, half sleeves, and natural button closure.

The indigo stripe clusters and natural cream ground create a composition that is light and considered, suited equally to warm weather and unhurried days. The amber-brown natural buttons complement the warmth of the natural fibre ground without competing with the indigo stripe.

The fabric has a natural coarseness that softens with wear and washing, developing its own texture and character over time.

Craftmanship

Each shirt is individually cut and stitched using handwoven Kala Cotton produced by artisan weaving communities of Kutch. The indigo stripe clusters emerge through the handloom process, the dyed yarn woven into the natural undyed ground at deliberate intervals, creating rhythm and movement through craft rather than print. Natural variations in weave, texture, and stripe placement are part of what makes each shirt individual.

Numbered Edition

Every shirt carries an individually numbered serial tag identifying its place within the edition of eighteen. The serial number serves as a permanent record of the shirt's position within the Indigo Trails collection.

A Note on Sizing

The shirt is cut with a relaxed silhouette and fits true to standard sizing. Please account for slight shrinkage after the first wash when selecting your size. If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up.

Care

To preserve the integrity of the handwoven Kala Cotton fabric:
• Wash at or below 30°C
• Hand wash separately
• Use mild detergent
• Do not wring
• Iron at medium temperature
• Line dry in shade
• Do not bleach
• Do not dry clean

As with all-natural handwoven Kala Cotton, slight shrinkage may occur after the first wash. We recommend washing in cold water and line drying in shade to minimise shrinkage and preserve the fabric's character over time.

As with all-natural handwoven textiles, gentle softening and subtle character development over time are part of the intended ageing process of the fabric.

Handmade Nature & Variations

Each shirt is individually handcrafted, resulting in subtle variations in weave, texture, colour, and finish.

Natural cotton flecks and seed specks may be visible within the fabric and are an authentic characteristic of Kala Cotton. These natural inclusions are part of the material's identity and should not be considered defects.

Actual colours and textures may vary slightly due to photography, lighting conditions, and screen settings.
