About this Piece

Heritage Grid is the shirt that reveals itself slowly.

From across a room it reads as a quiet off-white, understated, almost plain. Step closer and the surface opens up entirely. Fine horizontal dashes of colour run across the natural Kala Cotton ground, terracotta-red, sky-blue, ochre-yellow, dark brown, teal, each one a separate yarn passage through the loom, deposited in short strokes that together create a grid of colour visible only at close range. It is not a stripe. It is not a pattern in the conventional sense. It is the accumulated record of every pass of the handloom shuttle, each one carrying a different coloured thread across the natural ground.

The ground itself is the natural undyed colour of the Kala Cotton fibre. All the multicoloured yarns are dyed using non-toxic dyes. What you hold is a surface where the natural and the dyed exist together, quietly, without competing.

This is the most complex weave in the 18 Limited Edition collection. The colours are not placed. They accumulate, the way a wall accumulates layers of colour over time, or the way a landscape carries more than one season at once.

The band collar and full sleeves give this shirt a refined, considered character. It is the shirt for someone who notices things.

Kala Cotton is a sustainable indigenous cotton variety handwoven in Kutch, lightweight, breathable, and honest in its texture. It is a fabric that carries the place it came from. Wearing it is, in a small way, carrying Kutch.

This shirt is part of the House of Kutch 18 Limited Edition Kala Cotton Research Collection, an ongoing exploration of Kala Cotton's material possibilities through considered design and artisan craft. Heritage Grid is one of eighteen. It will not be repeated.

Fit & Style

Designed with a refined band collar, full sleeves with cuffs, and natural button closure.

From a distance the shirt carries a quiet, off-white presence. Up close the multicoloured grid becomes visible, a surface that rewards looking carefully. The amber-brown natural buttons complement the warmth of the terracotta and ochre tones within the weave, tying the palette together without drawing attention away from the fabric itself.

The fabric has a natural coarseness that softens with wear and washing, developing its own texture and character over time.

Care

To preserve the integrity of the handwoven Kala Cotton fabric:
• Wash at or below 30°C
• Hand wash separately
• Use mild detergent
• Do not wring
• Iron at medium temperature
• Line dry in shade
• Do not bleach
• Do not dry clean

As with all-natural handwoven Kala Cotton, slight shrinkage may occur after the first wash. We recommend washing in cold water and line drying in shade to minimise shrinkage and preserve the fabric's character over time.

As with all-natural handwoven textiles, gentle softening and subtle character development over time are part of the intended ageing process of the fabric.

Handmade Nature & Variations

Each shirt is individually handcrafted, resulting in subtle variations in weave, texture, colour, and finish.

Natural cotton flecks and seed specks may be visible within the fabric and are an authentic characteristic of Kala Cotton. These natural inclusions are part of the material's identity and should not be considered defects.

Actual colours and textures may vary slightly due to photography, lighting conditions, and screen settings.
