Description

About this piece

The star guided the merchant home. But it was the Kharwa navigator who knew the stars by name, reading the night sky from the open deck, steering the dhow from port to port across open water while the merchant slept below. The merchant carried the goods. The Kharwa carried the voyage. The Tara carving draws from the star forms found across the architectural and decorative vocabulary of merchant Kutch, sharp pointed rays emerging from a central core, a pattern of orientation and return. Handcarved from a single piece of teak by local artisans in collaboration with the House of Kutch studio. Each piece carries its own grain, depth, and surface character.

Care

Keep away from direct moisture and prolonged sunlight. Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth. Avoid water, chemicals, or abrasive cleaners.

Handmade Nature & Variations

Each plate is individually handcarved, resulting in subtle variations in wood grain, carving depth, tone, and finish that are part of its character. Actual colours and textures may vary slightly due to lighting and screen displays.

Delivered as Heritage Should Be

Your plate arrives wrapped in natural kala cotton, a textile tradition rooted in the same Kutch it was made in. Nestled within a hand block-printed Ajrakh pouch, it travels with the quiet richness of two craft traditions holding a third. A laser engraved teak story card accompanies each plate, carrying the name, the story, and the world the carving comes from, in the same material as the plate itself.
