Description

About this Work

Tera Fort in Kutch carries some of the most significant Kamangiri paintings documented in our research, wall paintings where the Ramayana unfolds not as a sequence of dramatic moments but as a complete painted world. Figures, landscapes, flora, fauna, architecture, and narrative exist together across the palace interiors, the way a living environment rather than an illustration

Ramayana Landscapes draws from that world. Rather than directly reproducing scenes from the epic, this work reinterprets fragments of the visual environment surrounding the Ramayana imagery within the fort, gateways, pavilions, trees, rivers, monkeys, peacocks, courtyards, and architectural settings that once animated the painted interiors of Tera. The panels explore the quieter moments surrounding the narrative, the decorative landscape in which the story breathes, rather than the story itself.

Comprising a complete set of six hand-painted panels, the work reflects how Kamangar painters transformed palace walls into narrative environments, where storytelling unfolded through setting, symbol, and detail as much as through figures.

This work belongs to the Kamangiri Mineral Revival Series, painted using natural mineral pigments on handcrafted lime-plaster surfaces, reviving a material practice that had fallen silent since around 1900. Each panel is individually hand-painted. No two surfaces are alike.

At House of Kutch, we explore the art, architecture, materials, and stories of Kutch through ongoing field research across the region, translating fragments of this exploration into collectible contemporary objects.

Each panel is individually handcrafted and numbered Panel 01/06 – 06/06, resulting in subtle surface variations, tonal shifts, brush marks, and textures that form part of its unique material character.
