Overview
Ramayana Landscapes draws inspiration from the historic Kamangiri paintings of the Ramayana found inside Tera Fort, Kutch, a painted tradition where architecture, landscape, flora, fauna, and narrative existed together across palace interiors.

Rather than directly reproducing scenes from the epic, this work reinterprets fragments of the visual world surrounding the Ramayana imagery within the fort, gateways, pavilions, trees, rivers, monkeys, peacocks, courtyards, and architectural settings that formed part of the painted language of Kamangar artists. The panels explore the quieter visual atmosphere surrounding the narrative, preserving details that once animated painted interiors in Kutch.

Comprising a complete set of six hand-painted panels, the work reflects how Kamangar painters transformed palace walls into narrative environments, where storytelling unfolded through decorative landscapes, architectural settings, and symbolic natural forms.

The Kutch Kamangiri Heritage Series is a limited body of collectible works inspired by the painted heritage of Kutch. Each panel is individually hand-painted using natural mineral pigments on handcrafted lime-plaster surfaces, carrying the tactile qualities, tonal depth, and material character associated with traditional wall-painting practices of the region.

At House of Kutch, we explore the art, architecture, materials, and stories of Kutch through ongoing field research across the region, translating fragments of this exploration into collectible contemporary objects.

Each panel is individually handcrafted and numbered Panel 01/06 – 06/06, resulting in subtle surface variations, tonal shifts, brush marks, and textures that form part of its unique material character.
